Testing services in substation.

Reliable Testing

One of the most important features of primary substations and smart compact secondary substations is a properly functioning and reliable remote control and automation system. Automation increases the stability of the electricity distribution system in all conditions, promoting consistent and safe operation. Our comprehensive testing services offer functional and reliable remote control and automation system testing for both primary substations and smart compact secondary substations.

In addition, we have extensive experience in testing protection relays, and our expertise covers all the most common protection relays.

Testing of Protection Relays

The primary function of protection relays is to recognize faults and disconnect the faulty feeder.Protection is based on proper parameter settings and accurate measurement. Well-implemented relay protection minimizes personal and property damage in the event of a fault. Testing of protection relays and protection devices ensures their proper operation in the normal and faulty state of the network.

Secondary injection testing of protection relays is made at substation by simulating faults with a testing device. The key factors of successful testing are high quality and calibrated test equipment and, above all, the test engineers’ understanding of both protection relay’s operation and the nature of the simulated phenomena. Our expertise covers all the most common protection relays in use.

Primary Earth Fault Testing

The correct operation of the protection relay can be confirmed to a certain extent by means of secondary injection testing, as it is always more or less simulated situation.

During primary earth fault testing, a controlled actual earth fault is performed and thus the behavior of the entire network in the event of a fault can be observed, including relays from healthy feeders. A properly executed primary test reveals errors that may have been unnoticed during secondary injection testing.

Execution of Primary Earth Fault Test

The primary earth fault test can be done with the light setting, where the fault is made by closing the circuit breaker of the feeder while the fault is connected. In most cases, every significant point about correct operation of earth fault compensation and protection relays can be confirmed by using this method.

However, the best results and the most realistic faults are obtained by using an earth fault testing with a fault cart designed and built for this purpose. This allows the fault to be connected directly at the fault location, and it can be performed while the network is in normal use.

Versatile Coupling Options

The fault cart can be connected to live overhead lines and the earth fault testing can be done without interruptions in distribution. To a disconnected feeder, the cart can be coupled to any air-insulated sections of overhead lines or secondary substations. By choosing different cables, connection to SF6 switchgear is also possible.

The duration of the fault can be set shorter than operation delay of the feeder’s protection, if actual trip is to be avoided. Earth fault cart is equipped with accurate measuring transformers and a disturbance record is created for each fault. Disturbance recordings can be analyzed immediately on site..

Protection Consulting

The increase in the proportion of underground cables and the total length of the network changes the profile of the earth fault. As the earth fault current increases, the old protection functions and parameter settings may not meet the requirements of the new operating environment, and the sensitivity of earth fault protection may not be at required level.

It is worth checking the earth fault protection parameters if cable length has increased significantly since the latest parameter check or when replacing protection relays. Installing a larger arc suppression coil is a great indicator that earth fault current has increased, and it is time to ensure that the earth fault protection parameters are up to date.

The parameters of protection relay are tailored to match the network. The protection consulting service includes consideration of future plans, special network topologies and special needs of the customer. Functional relay parameters protect the network effectively and significantly reduce the risk of damage.
