During my 4,5 years at Ensto, there have been a vast number of changes, not only related to work and our organization but also to the pandemic and war. Those are not things that you can have an effect on, but still, they affect you. I find it very good that the employer emboldens us to search for and find the balance between work and leisure.
My work as Senior Product Development Engineer requires constant learning and information digesting, and that is something I like! We are encouraged to research and study how things could be made in a smarter way. I learned a lot about electricity distribution before coming to Ensto; I was not familiar with that earlier. I knew about electronics through my hobbies, but for example, SCADA and related standards and protocols were something totally new. It has been valuable to explore what kind of smart solutions we could offer for the DSO clientele.
All the changes in the working environment and the world, in general, have had an influence on the projects we have been and are working on. Sometimes, that is stressful, and hence, it is good that the company offers us various tools to deal with stress. I have utilized the Auntie mental health support service Ensto is providing and find it very useful. We are reminded that it is the balance between work time and leisure time that counts. People are just happier and healthier when the balance exists. Also, the fact that we are trusted makes our stress levels come down. We have this hybrid model which allows us to work both at home and in the office, and no one is controlling that – at least as long as the results speak for themselves.
I graduated from Aalto University of Technology with a Master of Science in Software Engineering 7 years ago and have worked with software development since that. I found Ensto in 2019 through a job advertisement as more resources were needed in the LVDC (Low Voltage Direct Current) project. The job description and the project seemed super interesting, so I applied and got the post. Today, I work in the Smart Tech team in Helsinki.
It is fascinating to develop software solutions that help our customers to make smart decisions that are based on data and facts. We are using artificial intelligence and data analytics that enable predicting, which in many ways means savings in money and protection for the environment.
The development projects are long-term, and I have participated in several. My main responsibility is leading software development and furthermore, that includes much researching and scanning the operational environment of the software universe. In addition, I help my colleagues with coding, testing and all other software development tasks. The work is versatile. For the moment, we are working on an arc suppression coil project.
There are many things I like about working at Ensto: low hierarchy, open atmosphere, and good spirit with colleagues. I am allowed to express myself and my opinions freely – and so is everyone else. Here, diversity and equality are valued, and it feels good to be part of the community as yourself. And this goes beyond the ethnic background and other characteristics we all have. I admit that I have learned a lot about working with various kinds of people – that did not belong to my strengths previously. Today I am better at interacting with people of different ages and with various qualities, and I want to further develop myself in that.
